Do you love dogs, but your allergies prevent you from being anywhere near them? Researchers at biotech startup Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR to knock out Canis familiaris allergen 1 (Can f 1), the gene behind the protein in dog saliva, hair, and dander allergies triggers most human dog allergies.
The result: two gene-edited pups, Alfie and Bailey, whose samples showed zero detectable Can f 1. Kindred's CEO, who has lifelong dog allergies, put it to the ultimate test with skin-prick trials: his skin reacted to everything except the edited dog's samples, and he says he hasn't had a reaction living with Bailey since.
Before you start imagining a sneeze-free golden retriever in your future, know that this is very early proof-of-concept work. The dogs are only two years old, so their long-term health remains an open question, and outside experts have raised real concerns. A Cambridge geneticist points out that breeding many dogs from a small founding population can concentrate unrelated mutations and cause problems down the line.
Kindred sees more compelling potential in guide dogs for allergic people who could benefit from a service animal. Either way, Kindred still needs FDA approval before any edited dogs could go from lab curiosity to family pet.
